Here's to hoping I still have one. You know you're in trouble when you have to serious consider carb-loading to make it through a day of normal obligations, the kind that need to be knocked out in a timely fashion in order to make all the untimely extras possible.

The good news: the Bald Man still gets stuff done. But come Fall 2010, the Bald Man fears he will be less generous with his time when the latter-day Langoliers come to call.

Egad; thanks for putting my own comparatively modest maelstrom of obligations into perspective. I've spent most of the semester staying ahead of the curve as far as my work goes, but there are enough wild cards in the deck that my hand is now impossible to play straight. I reckon that's why semesters are four-month affairs: if they lasted any longer we'd all run out of steam, and if they were any shorter we'd all wind up about five hurdles short of finishing the race.

I agree -- the worst thing you can do at the end of October is think about what's coming up. I'm already regretting the schedule I've given myself and my students for the next month. It's going to be a LOT of work for them and a LOT of grading for me. Plus, I'm teaching two Shakespeare plays that I've never taught before. (I taught all the "easy" ones early on... just call me a moron.) All while 8 months (and by the end of it, 9 months) pregnant. Nice.

The Bald Man seems to be in one of those odd and precarious positions only academics can be in ... Do what's best for the soul, or even the Soul, my good man.
